1. Title: Light Sensor Cubelet (for Younger and Older Groups)

2. Objectives

● To explore the light sensor Cubelet.

3. Key Conceptsw
Sensor / Input / Output / Light Sensor / Distance

4. Georgia Standards

MD1f
Begins to identify ordinal numbers.
MD1g
Associates numeral name with set of objects.
MD2a
Copies a pattern using sounds or physical movements.
MD4c
Uses language to indicate where things are in space: positions, directions, distances, order.
SD3b
Investigates different types/speeds of motion.
CD2a
Uses music and movement to express thoughts, feelings, and energy.
CD2b
Explore various music types, musical instruments, and music from various cultures.

MCCKCC4
Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
MKG3b
Extend a given pattern and recognize similarities in different patterns.
MCCKG1
Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describes the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.
SKCS4b
Describes changes in size, weight, color, or movements, and note which of their other qualities remains the same.
SKP2
Students will investigate different types of motion.
SSKG2
Students will explain that a map is a drawing of a place and a globe is a model of the earth.

1st Grade
ELACC1R14
Ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text.
ELACC1L5
With guidance and support from adults, demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings.
MCC1OA1
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing with unknown in all positions.
S1CS4
Compare very different sizes, weights, ages, and speeds of both human made and natural things.
S1P2
Students will demonstrate effects of magnets on other magnets and other objects.
PE1.1a
Demonstrates basic movement patterns while changing directions and levels in general and personal space.
PE1.3a
Improves skills while participating in enjoyable activities.
PE1.5a
Demonstrate self-control and follows rules and procedures with very little teacher direction.

5. Procedures
1) Review the previous session.
- The distance sensor senses objects differently, depending on distances

2) Introduce the light sensor Cubelet.
There is another sensor, which is called a light sensor
What will the light sensor sense?

3) Explore the light sensor with individual Cubelets.
(1) Name: Light sensor
(2) Function: Sensing lights
(3) Feature: Black color, a small pink circle which senses lights
(4) Collect individual Cubelet

4) Experiment
We will check how the light sensor works with a light
Let’s make the room dark
Use a flashlight in the darkroom to have the light sensor sense the light (to make sure that this
experiment succeeds, the teacher will have to allow only one child at a time to use the flashlight)
What happens when the light sensor senses the light?

5) Change the types of lights
Let’s see how the light sensor senses different lights. (Have a child lights one at a time in the darkroom
   except for the sunlight.)

6) Explore the light sensor by using a speaker Cubelet
 - (Children explore with their own Cubelets: power Cubelet, light sensor Cubelet,
   light/bar graph/speaker actor Cubelets)

7. Review of Today’s Activity.
What is the name of this Cubelet?
What does it sense?
